To me, bibimbap (pronounced bih bim bop) is the Korean form of a meatloaf. You keep some basic ingredients the same, but practically the whole recipe can be changed to your personal taste. Try this recipe first if you're wary of cooking Korean food. Once you have it mastered, play around with it until you find the bibimbap that is perfect for you and your family. The fun in cooking is making a recipe all your own!
Ingredients
1/2 cup canned green beans, drained
1/3 cup canned peas, drained
1/4 cup fresh carrot, shredded
2 cups cooked white rice
1 egg per serving
2 tbsp soy sauce
1 tsp garlic
olive oil
Begin by cooking your rice according to your rice pot directions (if you don't have a rice pot, read on the bag of rice to see how long to boil it). Heat olive oil in a large skillet or wok until water dropped into it sizzles. Add carrots and cook for 1-2 minutes, constantly stirring. Add green beans, peas, soy sauce and garlic, and cook for an additional 4-5 minutes, or until all ingredients are heated thoroughly. Place cooked rice in a serving bowl, and top with vegetable mixture. While skillet is still hot, fry an egg to place on top of each serving.
Tips
*Meat can easily be added to this dish. Cut the meat into small pieces and cook it in the hot skillet or wok before adding your vegetables to be sure that it is done.
*Traditionally, this recipe calls for breaking a raw egg over each serving. In theory, the heat of the rice and vegetables will cook the egg. Please don't do this. I really don't want to be sued when you get salmonella.
*You can alter this recipe by changing the vegetables, but I don't recommend using potatoes. Rice is starchy enough, and potatoes would weigh this dish down. Fresh potatoes also take longer to cook than canned, and canned ones fall apart way too easily.
*Try changing the type of rice used to really switch up the dish. Brown rice makes a delicious bibimbap, but it takes longer to cook than white rice. No matter what rice you use, check the package on how to cook it. It varies much too widely for me to give directions here.
Good luck and good cooking!
